Key Features and Functions
Purpose: Measures accurate bearings of objects, Sun/stars, and determines compass error (deviation).
Design: Usually manufactured from high-quality non-magnetic brass to prevent interference with the compass.
Components: Contains folding sighting vanes (rear peep sight and front vertical wire), a reflecting mirror/prism to read the compass card, a shadow pin (gnomon) for sun azimuths, and a spirit level to ensure a horizontal reading.
Compatibility: Designed for standard marine compasses, adhering to standards like GB/T 335-2005 (e.g., GFC series), fitting over them to rotate easily.
Usage in Navigation
